Czech Delegation and Czech titles at 60th DOK Leipzig 2017

We are thrilled to share, that there is going to be a sound Czech presence at the jubilee 60th International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film.

Thanks to the support of the Czech State Cinematography Fund and in co-operation with the DOK Leipzig Co-Production Market, IDF is organising Czech Delegation to DOK Leipzig 2017 bringing there nine Czech documentary professionals.

The festival takes place October 30 – November 5, 2017 and apart from its official programme sections, will traditionally include industry sections: DOK Co-Pro Market and DOK Film Market. The Czech Delegation includes 3 professionals with projects included in the Co-Pro Market, 5 young producers and one director attending the Co-Pro market with their projects as an Observers. There are 3 Czech films included in the Film Market videolibrary and Helena Třeštíková’s latest feature documentary ce A Marriage Story (CZ, 2016 / 102’) will have its German premiere in Leipzig (two screenings take place 31.10.22:00 Schaubühne Lindenfels & 03.11.19:30 CineStar).

Czech projects at DOK Co-Pro Market
800 individual meetings between producers and potential coproducers, financiers, commissioning editors, distributors and sales agents will take place over two days.
35 projects from 30 countries were selected to participate in the coproduction market, among those Andrea Culková’s new feature documentary project Testosterone Story (A. Culková / CZ / 90’) produced by Miroslav Novák (Duracfilm), in coproduction with Tereza Polachová (HBO Europe). The story brings us to Rehabilitation Center Kladruby for patients, who suffered injuries and affections of movement and nervous system and is best in short presented by its log line: What does it mean to be a man in today’s world once you've lost power, sex drive and money? The project is expected to be released in 2018 and has been supported by the State Cinematography Fund and by Creative Europe – MEDIA, developed at the Ex Oriente Film (2016), presented at the East European Forum at East Doc Platform 2017. Director Andrea Culková with producer Viktória Hozzová will be attending the DOK Co-Pro Market.

Czech minority coproduction The Good Death (T. Krupa / SK, CZ / 90’) produced by Tomáš Krupa (Hailstone) and coproduced by Dagmar Sedláčková (MasterFilm) opens a difficult subject of assisted suicide. The film tells a story of Janette who suffers terminal illness and would like to die a dignified death, however, this is not possible in her home in the United Kingdom. Project is supported by Slovak Audiovisual Fund and is planned to be released in 2018. Both the director and the producer will participate in the DOK Co-Pro Market.

Czech Observers at the DOK Co-Pro Market
Attending the Co-Pro market will be producer Anna Herza Tydlitátová –Telekinetic, who is currently working with director Bohdan Bláhovec on his feature documentary Satanic Girs: Women on the Move (CZ / 52’ & 80’ / 2019). The film follows several retired pop divas as they remember their wild rock’n roll past, touching upon the topics of aging, relationships and selective memory. Project was developed at Ex Oriente Film (2016), presented at the East European Forum at East Doc Platform 2017 and has since been have successfully pitched at B2B DOC in Kiev and Baltic Sea Forum for Documentaries in Riga. Anna Herza Tydlitátová will be attending the Co-Pro Market.

Another young Czech producer joining the delegation in Leipzig is Kristýna Květová - Cinémotif Films with Johana Švarcova’s debut, the upcoming documentary essay about the origins of the electronic music in the 50’s and 60’s in post-war Europe: The Sound Is Innocent. Czech (Cinémotif Films) – French (Films de Force Majeure) – Slovak (Punkchart Films) coproduction project was developed at the Ex Oriente Film (2016) and presented at the presented at the East European Forum at East Doc Platform 2017 and pitched successfully at Eurimages Lab Project at KVIFF 2017 and is planned to be released in 2018.

Producer Alice Tabery – Cinepoint, who is also attending the co-production market as one of the producers in the delegation, is currently preparing a documentary project Jan Jedlička: Colourful Traces of a Landscape directed by Petr Záruba about a Czech-Swiss artist Jan Jedlička, who has found his artistic home in Maremma region in Tuscany. The Czech-Swiss coproduction is planned to be released in 2019.

Producer Jakub Pinkava will be attending the co-production market on behalf of the film production PINK. Their current documentary projects are a road movie, following a “rock star lifestyle” of The Tap Tap band members Lust For Life, which was pitched at the East European Forum 2017 and is produced and directed by Radovan Síbrt - PINK, in co-production with HBO Europe and supported by the Czech State Cinematography Fund. Another project in making is web-based documentary by Zdeněk Chaloupka, The Forgotten War, that explores the reality of everyday life in the so-called ‘grey zone’, the territory adjacent to the front line in East Ukraine. Produced by Jakub Pinkava – PINK and co-produced by FAMU.

Director and FAMU graduate Andran Abramjan, who will be attending the festival and market with his producer Hana Šilarová – Frame Films, is finishing his debut documentary titled Empire Builders. The docufiction essay navigates the inner worlds of those who believe in the clash of civilizations and long to live a big story, dominate history and play a high-stakes game, whether as film protagonists, grey eminences or manly heroes. The film is planned for release in 2018.
