The Touch of the Blue Crocodile

Dotek modrého krokodýla

Directing: Petr Tomaides

Synopsis

On the background of the Mayan legend of the blue crocodile, the film follows the relationships between people and crocodiles. The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus), one of the largest species of crocodiles in the world, can grow to the length of six metres. For natural reasons but also due to the expanding construction, crocodiles are getting closer to people. Common people live next to them, biologists are studying them, environmentalists take care of them, fishermen encounter them in their work. Others were attacked by a crocodile. What is it like to live in daily contact with such animals? What is the touch of a crocodile really like? Documentaries about crocodiles we have seen so far are rather about animals than people. We try to show them in a different light. Through the eyes of people who love them or hate them. We want to reveal the emotional, mental and physical influence of crocodiles on people. On one hand, there are people bitten by a crocodile, whose bodies and lives have been destroyed, on the other hand there are people who risk their lives to save these animals. Unreal for Europeans, in Mexico this is everyday experience. The stories of people who have "touched" a crocodile create a mosaic of new perspectives of the peculiar animal living close to people. Be it on board of a ship or a plane, in a car or on foot, we explore the swampy mangroves of Western Mexico swarming with crocodiles. The atmosphere of the documentary is intensified by experimental art sequences as well as by the imaginary narratives about crocodiles selected from old Mayan writings and mystical books. The Touch of the Blue Crocodile allows the viewers to really touch the mysterious, silent world of crocodiles.
