The Quest of the Schooner Creoula

A Campanha do Creoula

Directing: Andre Valentim Almeida

Synopsis

A Portuguese film director boards the proud schooner Creoula to set out on his country's greatest scientific exploration ever. The ship sets sail towards the Savage Islands, the southernmost land mass belonging to Portugal, where the ship's crew will explore its geology, flora and fauna. But three weeks without contact with the mainland is a long time for a landlubber, and the voyage meanwhile also becomes an inner expedition for André. For he realises that he is sailing in the slipstream of his uncle, who embarked on a similar journey many years ago. His family's history and Portugal's historical tradition of exploration are suddenly reflected in each other - while the local and Spanish crew members discuss the football World Cup for dear life in the background! A film for anyone with a penchant for exploration - and for the very special, Portuguese variant of melancholy. The film won this year's Doc Alliance Award, which is awarded annually by CPH:DOX and six other European film festivals in Cannes.
