Directing: Petr Baran

Synopsis

The Solov'evsk Islands, situated in the White Sea in northern Russia, have been a scene of pain and suffering. They first became a setting of slaughter hundreds of years ago, when all the monks who were faithful to the old religious rite were killed; not a long time ago, in the last century, the first gulag was established here. What an easy matter it is to convert monks' cells into dungeons! Those who come to visit nowadays walk on the bones of hundreds of thousands of innocent victims of the despotic Communist regime. The documentary was devised as a visual poem and impresses through its commentary drawing on evidence given by victims, including writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. The soundtrack of the film works with liturgical songs and Vladimir Vysotsky's song Čápi (White Storks).
