The WDR (West German Radio and Television) is a public broadcaster based in Cologne. It is the biggest and the most important of federal network ARD´s channels. WDR produces a full TV program for the region of North Rhine-Westfalia, contributes to more than 20% to the ARD program and to about 10% to the ARTE program. WDR has six weekly strands for documentary program: current affairs (45’), social issues (45’), wild life (45’), regional history (45’), national/international history (45’/60’), and documentary film (90’). Apart from current affairs and social issues, all other programs are produced, co-produced, commissioned or bought by the Documentary Department/Culture and History. Numerous WDR documentary programs have won prestigious national and international awards.
