Andrea Kuhn is a trained film scholar and headed the Erlangen Silent Film Music Days from 2001 to 2011. Since 2007, she has been the full-time director of the International Nuremberg Human Rights Film Festival. For several years, she was chair of the Human Rights Film Network, an association of over 50 film festivals worldwide focusing on human rights. Andrea Kuhn is a member of the European Film Academy, a member of the board of trustees of the medico international foundation, and was a member of Dox Box e.V., an organization that supports documentary filmmaking in the Arab world. Andrea Kuhn is also one of the initiators of the "Festivalarbeit gerecht gestalten" (Fair Festival Work) initiative, which campaigns for better working conditions at film festivals under the umbrella of ver.di.
