Polina Georgescu grew up in Moldova, in a Ukrainian-Romanian family with a mix of languages and identities. After emigrating in 2005, she lived in the US, UK, and Hungary before making Berlin her home in 2019. With an academic background in Eastern European studies from University College London, Polina initially pursued a career in development and humanitarian work. However, her exploration of questions of identity and belonging through documentaries and camera took over around 2015.
She produced No Country for the Poor (2017, SWR/ARTE) and directed and filmed You Have to Be Here to Believe (2022, OneWorld 2023, WatchDocs 2023). In addition, she has worked as a cinematographer for several narrative shorts, including Suite (2021), which won the German Generations Film Award.
