Marlon Riggs (1957–1994) was an Black American filmmaker, educator, poet, and gay rights activist. After graduating from university, he went through various internships in filming documentaries for independent studies. He also taught documentary film at the University of Berkeley. In his work, he focused on the issue of gender and race representation, especially with regard to the manifestations of homophobia expressed by American society.
