Mikulas co-founded Background Films, where he produced, among others, the six-hour film essay by legendary Czech New Wave filmmaker Karel Vachek, COMMUNISM AND THE NET OR THE END OF REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY (IFF Rotterdam 2020), and the spiritual comedy JOURNEY TO ROME by Tomasz Mielnik (Karlovy Vary IFF 2015). He co-produced LEAVE NO TRACES by Jan P. Matuszyński (Venice – Main Competition 2021), Mihai Mincan’s debut TO THE NORTH (Venice – Horizons 2022), and the Lithuanian film HUNGER STRIKE BREAKFAST by Karolis Kaupinis. He is currently completing the period film GREGORIUS, THE CHOSEN ONE, based on Thomas Mann and directed by Tomasz Mielnik. In 2025, together with Marek Novák, he released a documentary survey, THE CZECH FILM PROJECT, searching for the essence of Czech cinema.
