Jakub Šimůnek

director of photography

Jakub Šimůnek grew up in a film makers family. Under his father´s and grandfather´s supervision he started to make photographs since he was six years old. His grandmother, who was a motocar racer, taught him to love technique and from his mother he learnt tidiness. At school his behaviour was not excellent and the school order was not in agreement with him.

After a successful graduation at the school for photography he accepted a post in the ČVUT studio where he worked as a cameraman and later he directed instruction films for universities. At this time he met a painter Miroslav Šisler and together they worked on the concept of an art theatre, where construction of the picture is determined by figures – girls hands, their movements and screened color.

The girls, their fascinating lines and their hands charmed both artists so they started to work together on a project of art schools AVU and FAMU called „Rukameron“ and opened an exhibition of their pictures and photograps in the National Technical Museum in Prague.

At Prague FAMU, where Jakub Šimůnek studied a camera classes, his cooperation with other artists started: director Jiří Vejdělek, Aurel Klimt, Theodora Remundová, Jan Bubeníček, Marián Polák and others. In December 2002 he graduated with his color etude „Rukameron“ and his diploma work „The role of a cameraman in the process of film work realization“ (available in Czech language only).

In past few years he worked as a cameraman with Martin Šmok and Lukáš Přibyl on two larger documents, mostly abroad. Materials from his travels he used for compiling photographic exhibition named „On the travel“.

As a cameraman he concentrates mainly on features film work, documentaries and advertisments. His speciality is underwater shooting. In photography he presents himself in portraits, documentary and artistic photography.
