Invisibles´ Glory

Unremarked presence – a phrase used to describe one of the oldest professions of mankind. The highest level of professionalism can be reached through working unremarkably and unrecognizably. Gravediggers have to cope with the responsibility of such an extreme and hard work. Several years ago, a tradition was born in Hungary; an event which focuses only on them by emphasizing their abilities, professionalism and commitment, namely the national mortician and gravedigger competition held every two years. Groups of gravediggers get together for one day to compare their knowledge, practical skills and awareness. This is also an opportunity to get to know each other and exchange professional experience from all over the country. The last competition was to be held in 2010. The newly elected Hungarian government came into power that year and started to give effect to strong measures in every area. Due to the new officials’ decision, the competition was unexpectedly cancelled. A group of men had already won and organized the competition twice in a row. They have been working together for 20 years. There are also officials claiming the competition is an important part of the mortician profession. These numbers of people cannot be reconciled to this situation. How could they win a new official decision to organize this event again? Or would it be satisfying to organize the competition again by themselves, just one more time?
