Canan was born in Turkey, and grew up in Berlin where she lives today. Her grandparents came to Germany in the 1970's as political exiles. Her directorial debut "Kıymet" (2012, 26 min) recently had its theatrical in the double program "Canım Kreuzberg" at Kino Moviemento Berlin. Canan's interest in challenging visual representations of race, culture and identity finds echo in her academic and film work. She studied Screen Documentary (M.A.) and Film Studies (B.A.) in Berlin, Barcelona and London. She has worked as assistant director on several documentaries, including "The Other Side of Istanbul" by Döndü Kılıç.
