Women’s Rights Nights (WRN) is an event organized since 2010 and so far had 8 editions. Held in Skopje and organized at different locations: MKC, Cinematheque of Macedonia, Cinema Millennium Cultural information center, Museum of City of Skopje and etc. it offers an alternative to traditional celebrations of International Women’s Day and through art, cinema, it encourages both women and men to critically reflect upon pertaining gender inequalities, while praising the achievements that have been made to date. Previous editions of WRN confirmed the interest of the citizens of Skopje in new forms of engagement with women’s rights and gender equality.
The upcoming, 9th edition will be held on 8th March 2018 in Cinema Frosina, Youth Cultural Center, Skopje. It will be observed under the global theme: Time is now: rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives. The 8th March event will host an exhibition which is consisted of two ensembles – the Swedish exhibition “Pioneering a Foreign Feminist Policy”, presenting key women and milestones in the Swedish foreign feminist policy, and the Macedonian ‘equivalent’ presenting the (in)visible women in our history. The Spanish documentary movie “Borders and Promises”(2017) will be screened, followed by a debate moderated by Ana Jovkovska, with guest speakers Labina Mitevska, producer and actress, Nenad Markovikj, political scientist and professor, Ana Buntevska, poetess and feminist, Mersiha Smailovikj, activist for human rights and Elena Prendzova, poetess and activist for human rights.
The event will conclude with a music performance by the band June.
This year’s 8th March event within Women’s Rights Nights is organized by UN Women Skopje office, the City of Skopje and the Institute for Human Rights, in collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden in Skopje.
As part of this year’s WRN a Women’s Rights Nights Week will be organized from 26th to 31st May 2018 in the Cinematheque of Macedonia followed with debates in high-schools.
