Lecture: WHAT IS IT WITH THIS PITCHING THING?
Veteran documentary mentor, Mikael Opstrup (EDN), yearly watches 700-800 pitch trailers and attends several hundred pitches and he is maybe one of the few who thinks that pitching is a constructive part of film production. Or at least: it’s probably here to stay. In this session, he would like to share some considerations about pitch trailers, and how it can become meaningful to pitch a film, that doesn’t yet exist.

Lecture: DOCUMENTARY PRODUCTION IN THE AGE OF EXCESS
How do producers approach films on topics and themes that have already been covered many times before? How does it affect their decision to produce the film and what are they looking for in the project? How does this then affect their strategy towards funds, broadcasters and distributors? In this lecture, Norwegian producer Torstein Parelius (UpNorth Film) will tackle these issues using examples from his company’s past productions.

In this talk, storyteller Frédéric Dubois invites you to take a carousel ride through the trendy media bullshit bingo landscape. Main attractions may include, but are not limited to: busting “fake impact”, shrugging off the “number obsession”, and setting our own “impact agenda”.

Masterclass: CHRISTIAN FREI
Masterclass by one of today’s most innovative filmmakers, an Academy Award nominee and a double Sundance winner, whose awarded films are unique in their complex approach to the theme, exclusive intimacy and humanism, and strong cinematic vision. In this masterclass, Christian Frei will talk about his last film Genesis 2.0 and share behind-the-scenes stories.

Lecture: MY WORK WITH THE PROTAGONIST
Three young and well-established directors on the contemporary European documentary scene – Marta Prus, Lukáš Kokeš and Damian Nenadić – share their experience with the various aspects of working with the protagonist(s). In this shared lecture they will discuss building-up the relationship, keeping contact when shooting over a longer period of time in a distant location, and the ethical aspects involved in the making of their films.

Lecture: GOLD EXTRA – EXPLORING DOCUMENTARY STORYTELLING IN NEW MEDIA
Artists Reinhold Bidner and Karl Zechenter will introduce the work of the Austrian artistic group gold extra, which produces artworks in and in between Fine Arts, Performance, Music and Hybrid Media. With innovative approach gold extra explores the new possibilities of the medium of digital games and virtual reality. In the lecture Reinhold and Karl will introduce gold extra approaches to documentary games and non-fiction storytelling on the examples of games, such as From Darkness, which brings the player in the heart of Nairobi, or The Fallen, exploring the events of war in Eastern Ukraine. The attention will be also given to the medium of Virtual Reality in the case of the current gold extra’s research project, the Documentary VR. www.goldextra.com

Lecture: FROM PRE-PRODUCTION PLANNING TO POST-PRODUCTION MAGIC
When building a documentary, you never really know what you’re going to get. Is your protagonist really the protagonist? Should the story be told chronologically? Does a scene mean what you wanted it to mean? In a discussion that examines everything from pre-production planning to post-production magic to the genius of sticky notes, editor Phil Jandaly, will break down how each stage subtly and dramatically can shape feature documentaries into universal stories that transcend borders and genres.

Opening screening of the international platform of alternative distribution for creative documentaries KineDok 2019 brings to Studio Alta an animated documentary Apart followed by a Czech premiere of Days of Madness by Damian Nenadić. Days of Madness portrays an incredible odyssey of two mentally diverse and unjustly rejected people, who are learning to accept the state they are in, while facing the blindness of the society and the health system that made them addicts. Followed by Q&A.

Lecture: ManicVR: AN IMMERSIVE JOURNEY INTO THE WORLD OF BIPOLAR DISORDER
Canadian filmmaker Kalina Bertin has drawn on her siblings experiences with bipolar disorder to develop a documentary film as well as a virtual reality experience which provides insight into the complex world of mental illness. As a storyteller, how does one transition from working with a linear narrative to an interactive narrative? How does embodiment and interactivity impact a user’s take away of a story? What are the ethics of representing mental illness? Kalina will be discussing the creative process of crafting ManicVR as well as addressing VR as an emerging tool to treat mental illness.

Masterclass: BRINGING THE PAST TO LIFE by MILA TURAJLIĆ and STAN NEUMANN
Using their films, director Mila Turajlić and director/editor Stan Neumann illustrate the diverse methods of working with archival materials and their possible use in contemporary documentaries. How to achieve the balance in archival documentaries between giving the context and exciting the imagination of the audiences?

Presentation dedicated to Czech documentary projects within East Doc Platform and One World programme. Upcoming feature documentaries are presented by producer-director team to an audience of invited representatives of leading international film festivals, sales agents, distributors, and to the wide public. This event is organized in cooperation with the Audiovisual Producers' Association (APA) and One World IHRDFF. Moderated by Tue Steen Müller.

Case study: CREATIVE DOCS & SALES – LET'S BE REALISTIC, NOT PESSIMISTIC
Using three examples from his line-up, Aleksandar Govedarica (Syndicado) will offer audiences a sincere probe into a world of sales of creative documentary films nowadays. What are the realistic expectations that filmmakers should have regarding the festival, TV, theatrical, educational, DVD and digital sales worldwide?

Panel: WOMEN IN FILM INDUSTRY: THE EXAMPLES OF CHANGE
The discussion on gender equality in audio-visual industry has been open for a while, and it is now more important than ever to discuss the fair conditions for everyone. The question of quotas and balanced programmes became gathering positive praise, as well as fierce resistance. Let’s face some evident data and see the positive outcome such initiatives bring and how the equality programmes could be successfully integrated in film festival programming, as well as film fund’s policies on larger scale. Panellists: Sarah Anderson (Chicken & Egg Pictures, US), Leena Pasanen (DOK Leipzig, DE), Jenny Wikstrand (Swedish Film Institute, SE), Biljana Tutorov (Circle, RS). Moderated by Brigid O’Shea.

For the nineteenth time, the prestigious pitch of the best Central and East European documentary projects will take place. 21 feature-length documentaries in development and production + 3 interactive projects from Central and Eastern Europe will be pitched to international industry professionals and potential funders. In the eighteen years of its existence, the East Doc Forum has welcomed more than 700 filmmakers and supported 160 documentary projects, including award-winning films from key international festivals, such as Brothers, The Domino Effect, Blind Loves, At the Edge of Russia, Rabbit à la Berlin, Sofia’s Last Ambulance, Village Without Women, Over the Limit, and Bakhmaro.
