KineDok is providing another documentary film online and free, this time about the Croatian-Slovenian border. The film The Wire will be available from 9 to 14 February and will be accompanied by an online discussion on KineDok International's Facebook page on Monday 13 February.
You can watch the documentary on kinedok.net. The film will be available in KineDok countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Croatia, Hungary, Georgia and Poland) and will be available with English/Czech/Slovak/Hungarian/Romanian or Croatian subtitles. In order to watch it for free, you must enter a voucher, which you can request by emailing us at films@kinedok.net.
There will be an international discussion of the documentary on Facebook on Monday 13 February at 7 PM (GMT+1). Guests of the discussion are director Tiha K. Gudac, András Kováts, director of Hungarian Association for Migrants Menedék and Zoran Stevanovic, UNHCR Central Europe's Regional Communications Officer. The discussion will be moderated by Milena Zajović, journalist, film critic and president of the humanitarian NGO Are You Syrious, which provides support to refugees and migrants in Europe.
THE WIRE (Tiha K. Gudac, 2021, Croatia)
The protagonist of the film by Croatian director Tiha K Gudac is a fence. A razor wire fence built by the Slovenian government to prevent refugees from entering Europe, destroying the beautiful landscape around the Kupa River. The fence has caused a collapse in tourist activity and a whole host of other problems. The region has become an arena for far-right nationalists, human rights activists, politicians, police and border guards, migrants and refugees trying to reach Europe. The aggressive barrier has become a symbol of the ugliness and darkness of contemporary society's past. There is so much suffering on one side and joyful marathons on the other. The director depicts a disturbed place torn apart by a sharp metal fence. "What is European about it? Nothing," someone says blankly. The way things are going, however, such a statement might not be entirely true. The Wire is part of a larger project, a collection of six documentaries (The Borderline Collection) focusing on similar "borders" in Europe.
