The 6th edition of the Al Jazeera Balkans Documentary Film Festival will take place from the 8th to the 12th of September in Sarajevo. IDF East Silver Manager Veronika F. Dvořáčková will be there scouting for new engaging projects and choosing a recipient of the East Silver Caravan Award. One of the projects in the Competition programme is an IDF Alumni film Flotacija.

“As the application process for the East Doc Platform 2024 was just opened and the call for the next edition of Ex Oriente training is coming soon our main focus is searching for new cutting-edge projects and filmmakers who could be a considerable addition to our activities,” says Veronika F. Dvořáčková.

The East Silver Caravan Award is granted by the International Documentary Film Festival to the best pitched feature-length documentary projects with high international potential. Selected projects receive support with distribution strategy and upon its completion will become a part of the East Silver Caravan for 12 months.

Documentary film Flotacija directed by Alesandra Tatić and Eluned Zoë Aiano participated in East Doc Platform 2022 and presented during the East Doc Market. The same year the project was granted The East Silver Caravan Award at IDFF Beldocs. According to the jury statement: "The film explores the conflicts between nature/tradition and industry/modernity with a high level of cinematic language and a rich narrative that bridges past and present."

You can see the movie on Sunday, September 10, at 16:30 in Cineplex.

Flotacija
Synopsis

As the bright colours from the glory days of the 1960s slowly fade in Majdanpek, Eastern Serbia, the only thing that hasn’t changed is the dominance of the local copper mine. Both a giver and taker of life, the mine is central to the local industry but a major threat to the local culture, as it spews out layers of toxic dust over the plants used for traditional medicine and magic spells.
