Synopsis

On the outskirts of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Elmira works and sleeps in a small sewing workshop that produces clothes for Russian markets. In many post-Soviet republics of Central Asia, such informal workshops have become the only refuge for single and divorced women, left behind by a collapsing industrial system and a wave of male labor migration. With her 20-year-old son working in Russia, Elmira pins her hopes on his earnings to one day buy her a home of her own.
When Elmira’s 13-year-old daughter Nursuluu moves from her grandmother’s rural home to live with her for the first time, their fragile reunion unfolds within the cramped space of the workshop — between the noise of sewing machines and the silences of shared nights behind the curtain. Over the course of two years, Stitch by Stitch observes their slow attempt to rebuild intimacy after years of separation.
Filmed with restrained, observational realism, the documentary explores the intersection of economic hardship, emotional resilience, and the quiet labor of love. Stitch by Stitch reveals how women on society’s margins continue to sew their lives — and hopes — back together, one thread at a time.
