Synopsis

In September 2004 armed Islamic militants, mostly Ingush and Chechen, occupied school in Beslan (North Ossetia, Russia) demanded recognition of the independence of Chechnya, and Russian withdrawal from Chechnya. They kept over 1,100 hostages over 3 days without food and water. On the third, Russian security forces stormed the building with the use of tanks and heavy weapons. The operation ended with the deaths of 334 people.
The circumstances of the siege and the operation were not investigated properly until now, no one from Russian military forces was sentenced. The families of the victims were struggling for justice for 13 years.
The European Court of Human Rights in its judgement from 2017 stated that Russia violated the "right to life" guaranteed by the human rights convention.
