Synopsis
Three years and three months alone on a bicycle, zig-zagging through all of the countries and territories of the two Americas, totalling 34.554 kilometres pedalled, from the North of Alaska to the Southern tip of Argentina. Add to that 4100 kilometres travelled by boats on the full length of the Amazon, seven of the highest volcanoes climbed, plus two failed attempts that almost saw Radu loosing his life.
This could be a heroic film about a young man overcoming unimaginable challenges for the sake of adventure... but Radu is as far from any typical hero figure as is Ushuaia, Argentina from Deadhorse, Alaska.
At the onset of his voyage, Radu is a hypochondriac and short-sighted young man, grappled with heartbreak, childhood traumas, and a sense of alienation intensified by his dysfunctional family's migration from Romania to Canada. After incredible adventures, multiple robberies, and even a few close encounters with death, Radu emerges, across the expanse of the world map, as a true explorer, about to meet his soul-mate, determined to embrace his new life as a full-time globetrotter.
Gone Guy is a thrilling journey through a tapestry of feelings, landscapes, challenges, adventures and encounters. It’s an adrenaline-filled, inspirational and uplifting documentary. But it is also a film about inadaptation, loneliness, traumas and healing, and about the discovery and understanding of the complex world we all live in and of one’s true self.
Prompted by a heartbreak that comes after a long string of traumas and inadaptation, Radu hastily starts his life’s biggest adventure, and one that will change him forever. Ever-changing landscapes, colourful characters that come and go, infinite doubts about himself and profound loneliness become the routine of this epic journey.
Radu lacks a lot of things when he starts his journey. But what he exceeds in is determination.
