What You Remember

Directing: Pauline Blanchet

Synopsis

What You Remember explores how political agendas have reshaped Skopje’s landscape and distorted North Macedonia’s historical consciousness—a story that resonates across Europe, where authoritarian regimes increasingly rewrite history.

Following the devastating 1963 earthquake, Skopje was reborn through international solidarity, transforming into a model of futurism. But decades later, this legacy was undone by the grandiose Skopje 2014 Project, orchestrated by former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski after Macedonia’s 2008 NATO bid was vetoed. Facing a national identity crisis, Gruevski exploited this moment to consolidate his power, filling the city with neo-antique monuments meant to connect Macedonia to a mythic past.

The project’s narrative aimed to instill national pride, but behind these towering statues and kitschy facades lay vast amounts of stolen state funds. Gruevski used the project to cement his rule, creating an elaborate facade of ancient grandeur to legitimize his regime. Yet, what has this done to the collective memory of Skopje’s people?

Although Gruevski ultimately fled to Hungary under the protection of his good friend Viktor Orbán, his neoclassical ‘Disneyland’ remains, defining Skopje’s daily reality. Now, with Gruevski’s party VMRO-DPMNE back in power amid Eastern Europe’s volatile shifts, North Macedonia is increasingly reliant on Hungary’s support.

Preserving authentic historical memory has become a race against time. In a city where archives are missing or destroyed, What You Remember confronts audiences with the disturbing truth: memory can be reshaped by those in power. By intertwining personal and political narratives, the film raises a globally resonant question: In an age of narrative manipulation, who controls what history is remembered?
