SPORT TO THE PEOPLE

SPORT NARODU

Directing: Đuro Gavran

Synopsis

The documentary serial 'Sport to the People' explores the role of sports in shaping the socialist individual and society in Yugoslavia from its founding after World War II until its disintegration in the early 1990s.

Under the leadership of President Josip Broz Tito and the Communist Party, sports were viewed in the newly established SFRY as an ideological tool aimed at strengthening the sense of unity among the nations of its six republics and bringing its citizens, especially the youth, closer to the Party and its ideology. Like education and healthcare, sports were intended to be accessible to everyone. As a result, gymnastics societies and sports clubs were established across the country, numerous competitions were organized, workers’ games and sletovi were held – spectacular mass choreographies that conveyed a message of unity, solidarity, and strength to the world.

Through six episodes, we trace the development of Yugoslavia and Yugoslav society through sports victories and defeats, competitions, and anecdotes, told from the perspectives of athletes, fans, sports commentators, journalists, and sociologists, accompanied by archival footage of sports moments that are part of the collective memory of a country slowly fading into oblivion.
