The prehistory of the Film Studies at the Masaryk University reaches back to the period right after 1945. The institutional foundations of the department, however, were not laid until after November 1989, when the Department of Theatre and Film Studies at the Faculty of Arts of the Masaryk University was established. The subject of Film Studies, or Theory and History of Film and Audiovisual Culture – which is the name under which the department was accredited in 2001, has been independently studied since 1993.
Currently, it offers B.A. (3 years), supplementary M.A. (2 years) and Ph.D. (4 years) study programs. Generally, the study program is defined by three major fields of study: history of the Czech cinema, history of the world cinema and theory and history of cinema, television, new media and audiovisual culture. It also provides courses in critical writing, film and TV dramaturgy and screenwriting.
