Martin Mareček is one of the most remarkable Czech filmmakers of the new generation. His films regularly collect awards and accolades on international film festivals. After studying at the Department of Culture Studies at Charles University in Prague, he graduated from the Department of Documentary Film at FAMU where he has also been lecturing since 2003. In addition, Martin has worked as a musician, script editor and co-founder of various social projects, such as Jednotka, Letokruh or Auto*Mat.

Mareček is best known for his feature documentaries, e.g. Dust Games / Hry prachu, which depicts the commotion surrounding the World Bank and IMF summit that took place in 2000 in Prague, Source / Zdroj, about issues around the construction of the BP oil pipeline in Azerbaijan and the winner of the Czech critics’ prize and Auto*Mate/ Auto*Mat – a film/activist happening project that broke through the boundaries of just one media telling the personal story of the birth of various activities aimed at creating a healthier and more liveable city.
Solar Eclipse/ Pod sluncem tma, latest film, by Martin Mareček, follows two Czech aid workers back to a village in Zambia where they had carried out an electricification project some years ago. The story of an attempt at transferring European technologies and responsibilities, a colorful exploration of one situation that, without judging and without any direct commentary, looks at different forms of light and darkness. Solar Eclipse was named Best Czech Documentary Film 2011 in the Czech Joy competition at Jihlava IDFF 2011, received the audience award there, and was selected by the jury of industry professionals for the Institute of Documentary Film’s (IDF) Silver Eye Award. Solar Eclipse also received a Trilobite Award presented annually by the Czech Film and Television Association (FITES) and was voted Best Czech Doc by Critics.
