While living in Central Asia to work in international development-related projects, Najeeb fell in love with the region – by its fascinating culture, history and landscapes, and through the beauty of the Central Asian peoples. Building on his background as a photographer, he expanded into the field of film, using the media to share stories of Central Asia with other parts of the world. Buzkashi! is Najeeb’s fourth documentary and second feature-length film.
He has made three other documentary films in Central Asia: his first film Herders’ Calling, set in Kyrgyzstan, played in 18 film fests around the world. He followed up with Falak, Song of the Soul, a short film about musicians playing a mystical form of music in Tajikistan. His last film, The Sweetest Embrace: Return to Afghanistan, a human story about family reuniting after being separated by war, is his first feature length film and is currently playing on television in several countries.
