Song Remains
Song Remains is a film about the meaning of oral traditions of music — about how important they are for young countries like Slovenia, formed on the remains of older civilizations. It is accompanied by a woman protagonist: a young vocalist, performer and philosopher, reflecting that story in four songs.
Irena Tomažin introduces us to folk songs from Armenia, Ukraine, Serbia and Slovenia. As distinct from national anthems, hymns and patriotic songs, folk songs are personal and complex in their meaning. On the one side they mark the important moments in people’s life, such as death, marriage, separation and birth, on the other they transmit (hi)story, human values and preserve memories.
The stories behind each of the folk songs are revealed separately by singers of those songs: Hasmik Harutyunyan from Armenia, Natalka Polovynka from Ukraine, Svetlana Spajić from Serbia and Ljoba Jenče from Slovenia. They are great connoisseurs of folk music in their region and they explain the meaning of their respective songs, the message they carry, where and how they found them, about their personal importance to both them and their cultures and other significant meanings.
Through the personal, subjective narrative, the film will explore the topic of music in a way it has never been filmed before. The images of landscape surrounding the homes of the protagonists and inscribed in their music, will guide us through the film like a historic and poetic fairytale. In the end, the film establishes a relation to our own origins through music.
