Kirsten Johnson (USA), the renowned filmmaker and cinematographer, will share in interactive masterclass with the Ex Oriente Film participants, her thought on her over 30 years in filmmaking, the ethics of image-making and its emotional and moral challenges as well as importance of sharing each other’s perspective.
Kirsten Johnson is a documentary filmmaker and cinematographer. She has filmed over 70 documentaries, and directed seven including Cameraperson and Dick Johnson Is Dead. Kirsten Johnson’s Dick Johnson is Dead premiered at Sundance 2020 where it won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Innovation in Non-fiction Storytelling. Kirsten went on to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing For A Documentary/Nonfiction Program, Critic’s Choice Award for Best Documentary Feature, and the Cinema Eye Award for Outstanding Achievement in Direction. Listed on dozens of top films of 2020 lists, the film made the Oscar shortlist, is distributed by The Criterion Collection, and is currently showing on Netflix with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Her previous film, Cameraperson, was included on The New York Times’ list Best Movies of 2016 was also shortlisted for the Academy Award. Her Field of Vision short, The Above was nominated for the 2016 IDA Documentary Awards’ Best Short Award. Her camerawork appears in Academy Award winner Citizen Four, Academy nominated The Invisible War, and Cannes’ Palme d’Or winner Fahrenheit 9/11. She is one of the only 5% of women members of the American Society of Cinematographers.
