In Passing by Gailė Garnelytė has been awarded the East Silver Caravan Award at this year’s Beldocs International Documentary Film Festival in Belgrade. The award was presented during the official ceremony on Saturday, May 24, and includes a year-long festival distribution support. Congratulations!

"This sensitive project is portraying characters whose lives have been affected by war, grief or social isolation. Through the eyes and guidance of a photographer we are witnessing deeply personal stories affected by global and social issues. High cinematic value and creative storytelling are capturing the glimpses of everyday life and human connection in its raw beauty. The East Silver Caravan Award goes to In Passing by GAILĖ GARNELYTĖ,“ the jury explained their selection.

Winning this award grants the project one year of dedicated festival distribution support through the East Silver Caravan. The film will be submitted to international festivals for consideration, and the Institute of Documentary Film will assist in shaping its overall festival strategy—giving In Passing valuable exposure and momentum on the global documentary scene.

In Passing (dir. Gailė Garnelytė, Lithuania, 62’)

For more than a decade, Artūras Morozovas has been photographing people in vulnerable situations – people affected by the war in Ukraine, as well as people experiencing social isolation in Lithuania. In the film, we meet Rita, a mother of three children who lost her husband to suicide and has a disability; Danutė, who lives alone in the forests; soldiers Lisa and Jaška, brutally murdered by the Russians, as well as Ivan, whose home was recently destroyed by a Bomb. Despite Artūras’s desire to remain impartial and objective, a close bond forms between the photographer and his characters, so the film is about the miracle of human connection and hope.
