Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, held annually during the last week of March in Kyiv, presents documentary films from all over the world. Previous editions of the festival included documentaries that were part of IDF's East Silver, supporting the festival distribution of Central and Eastern European documentary films – such as My Home (Jáma, dir. Jiří Stejskal), which received the Audience Award in 2015, Normal Autistic Film (Normální autistický film, dir Miroslav Janek), See You In Chechnya (dir. Alexander Kvatashidze) and 5 October (5. október, dir. Martin Kollár), which got the Main of Student Jury in 2017.
This year, two films from East Silver catalogue are competing at the 10th edition of the festival. Austrian documentary Sand and Blood (Sand un Blut, dir. Matthias Krepp, Angelika Spangel) combines a montage of found footage from various online platforms and the voices of Syrian and Iraqi refugees. The film received the Silver Eye Award for the best feature length East and Central European documentary in 2017. The screenings and Q&A with directors is on the programme on Wednesday, March 28 and Thursday, March 29.
Docudays UA held two screenings of the Ukrainian documentary Almost 10.000 Voters (Майже 10.000 виборців), which participated in last year’s East Silver Market. The full-length debut by a young director Ulyana Osovska tells a story of a local activist Oleksander who believes in the ideals of Ukraine’s 2014 revolution and decides to run for mayor of his city.
The White World According to Daliborek (Svět podle Daliborka, dir. Vít Klusák) will be screened in non-competition section on Wednesday, March 28. The stylized portrait of Czech neo-Nazi was part of East Silver Caravan 2017/2018 and is also screened in KineDok’s 4th edition this year. The film, which Screendaily described as “a deadpan mix between Grey Gardens and This Is England“, divided the audience and brought the attention not only to its theme but also to thin borders between live action and documentary films.
