East Silver documentaries in the Visions du Réel Media Library

Author: Veronika Zýková

Five titles from the East Silver catalogue are part of the Visions du Réel Media Library, available from April 25 at the online edition of the festival.

Post-Eclipse Transfocation (dir. Pavlína Fichta Čierna, SK)
The video draws attention to the situation of trans-gender individuals. This is an endeavour to get empathically inside the experience of a person whom society regards as "sick". In Slovakia, there predominates in society an ignorance on this issue, associated with various prejudices. Equally inadequate is human rights legislation that might ensure gender equality and protect those who are still exploring their gender identities. The bold personality and protagonist Romina Kollárik describes the experiences and absurd situations in which individuals find themselves, all because of directives or even the will of someone in a bureaucratic role. This video-portrait shows how the fates of trans-gender people can be affected by the inhumane attitude of the majority.

Schism (dir. Jorge Sánchez Calderón, CZ, ES)
Gran Dani works as a fruit vendor and writes songs inspired by his daily life, which become the repertoire of his underground punk band. One day drama hits his life and hell breaks loose... Gran Dani needs to subdue his fears and find the way to master his new reality, reinventing himself. The film is a collage of video-diaries collected over a period of 13 years, found footage, interviews and animations illustrating Gran Dani's state of mind and spiritual process.

The Circle (dir. Margit Lillak, ES)
The film follows a new eco-community from 2014 with blissful beginnings to their apocalyptic collapse in 2019. A group of adults together with kids step out of society as we know it, deconstructing the basic pillars of life. The founders of the commune, 2 strong women, fall into a powerstruggle triggered by a love triangle that splits the community up. Families break up, friends are betrayed.

Pripyat Piano (dir. Eliška Cílková, CZ) - the film is also part of the festival official selection
26 April 1986: Chernobyl’s reactor number 4 explodes and provokes the biggest nuclear disaster in history. Pripyat, where the plant is located, becomes a ghost city. Guided by former inhabitants, Eliška Cílková takes us in her quest of the town’s memory. Gracefully shot, the film reminds us the power of music where less expected.
The film got Silver Eye Award 2019 for the best short film in East Silver Market at Ji.hlava IDFF

Wolves at the Borders (dir. Martin Páv, CZ) - the film is also part of the festival official selection
In the Broumov region in the Czech Republic, the last wolf was eliminated two centuries ago. Its reintroduction, like elsewhere in Europe, triggers passionate debate between livestock farmers and environmentalists. Martin Páv planted his camera in the middle of this battlefield, on which is being played out the pacified coexistence of humans with this totem animal, a symbol of wild nature.
Wolves at the Borders were developed within Ex Oriente Film 2018 workshop and pitched at East Doc Forum 2019
