Synopsis

In 1992, the war in Georgia separated two Abkhazian sisters Lana and Tamara by sending them to two different countries because they both married Georgians and it was and still is complicated to be a mixed couple. In the summer of 2021, 81-year-old Larissa, their mother, showed alarming signs of memory loss. At this time she was living in the de facto region of Abkhazia, controlled by Russia. By November, her daughter Lana, living in Belgium for 30 years, arranges for Larissa to move to Tbilisi. Lana's return to Georgia marks the start of a family reunion. As they celebrate New Year 2022, Larissa’s condition stabilizes, bringing brief peace. However, the onset of the war in Ukraine in February changed everything. Lana's sister Tamara and her family, living in Moscow, face the threat of conscription for their sons. Tamara relocates to Georgia, with her husband Eldar and their sons, now safely out of Russia. Eventually, they reunite in the family’s old apartment in Tbilisi. The film chronicles three years of war and the family's struggle to reconnect and support Larissa as her memories fade. "This sea is not mine" portrays a family’s struggles over the past three chaotic years, while exploring multiple narratives and layers of memory and trauma through Larissa’s thoughts and actions amidst the turmoil of both past and present conflicts.
