Synopsis
When I Wake Up One Morning is a documentary drawing
on the widely known song Bella Ciao to link the disparate
fates of women. By entering their intimate lives, the film
sees the contents of the song reflected in today's reality.
Though coming from various countries in the Balkans,
what the protagonists have in common is their daily battle
for survival. To provide additional insight into fragile
human fates, which have been and remain part of our
immediate and wider universe, the film also connects with
the past, symbolically travelling into the time and place of
the song's creation, to meet mondine, female workers on
Italian rice paddies. One of the songs these women used
to sing was Bella Ciao. All the women's stories ultimately
come together in a poignant vision, regardless of time and
place, yet burning with longing and hope. Just like Bella
