Synopsis
In 1944, WW2 was ending and Carl Lutz was Swiss Vice Consul in Budapest. After exhausting negotiations with Adolf Eichmann, he succeeded, with letters of safe conduct (so-called Schutzpässe), in saving thousands of persecuted Jews in Hungary from deportment and, thus, from certain death. Married and devout Lutz got caught in a moral dilemma when he fell in love with a Jewish woman he rescued. After the war he left his wife and moved to Berne with his mistress and his stepdaughter Agnes. Yet his homeland did not thank him for his heroic deed in Hungary. It even instituted proceedings against the diplomat. Carl Lutz fought fiercely for his «rehabilitation» until his death. It was only twenty years later that Switzerland issued an apology and acknowledged his heroic deed. The film tells a heroic and dramatic story through survivors’ accounts and Lutz’s legacy of film footage.
