The Presence of Arnošt Lustig

Tvoje slza, můj déšt'

Directing: Eva Lustigová

Synopsis

In this film, Arnošt Lustig, hailed by the Literary Review of London, as “the best living Czech author whose work calls for the Nobel and all other literary prizes,” answers a whole lot of existential questions to his daughter. The charismatic eighty-year-old sparkles and surprises with imagination, originality and insight. A holocaust survivor, fighter and artist imprints meaning to the maze of an irrational world. His words expose the make-up of a human being who has all the hues of humanity. An adolescent when Hitler was turning millions to ashes, he happened to live through several upheavals in the history: 1939 - 1945 in Europe; 1948 in Palestine; 1968 in a Czechoslovakia that woke to freedom that was buried promptly. This film is not about Lustig's remarkable chronology. It is about the biology of a remarkable artist whose perception of survival, warmth, balance, and his sense of “Id” enabled him live when others were falling.
