Synopsis
Now 20 years after the breakup of the Soviet Union, many Russians feel differently about their country’s not so distant past and share different views about the events that changed their lives forever. And it is not about imperial ambitions and geopolitical claims, it is about psychology of people born in a country that does not exist anymore, the memory about which being actively cleansed by modern Russian ideology bonzes. "Retracing Russia" provides insight into lives of ordinary Russians who share their experience before and after the collapse of the empire. We follow a photographer who digs out old stills from his archive, and goes on a two-month journey to try to find the people he photographed 30-40 years ago.
