Synopsis
“I don’t like the dark, but I spent my life in it”.
In the Breza coal mine, little has changed in 50 years. Here, 400 meters below the surface, miners still enjoy the solidarity and job security of life in socialist Yugoslavia. Above ground, capitalism and individualism are now the order of the day.
This film follows Sakiba, a female mine worker at Breza. Her subterranean existence is a relic from a different age – when the oil crisis and labor shortages led to women working underground. On her 50th birthday, she will qualify for retirement. The End of Darkness explores what it means to be a woman working in a coal mine.
