Synopsis
This creative documentary tells the story of women in art. The heroine of the film is Mara Kimele, one of the most distinguished theatre directors in Latvia. "She said: 'I don’t want much, I want to be an artist - a woman.' She didn’t want anything else, so there was nothing to be done." Thus, Mara writes about herself in 1963. Together with the actors of New Riga Theatre Māra stages F. Dostoevsky's “Crime and Punishment”, plays out small and grand family dramas with her son Pēteris (who is played by an actor), conflicts with her grandmother Anna Lācis (widely known as Asya, whose life is closely tied to the names of Walter Benjamin, Bertolt Brecht, Bernhard Reich), and, over the span of fifty years, creates significant performances. All the characters in this documentary are acting - some play many roles, some just themselves. But does that make them less genuine?
