Synopsis
Flowers on Marsovo is a documentary observation through a young man and a team of people who carry out the rite of funeral ceremonies for fallen soldiers and form traditions of remembrance.
Life intersects with death. Following Roman Kharivskyi’s (24) daily routine, we observe life before, during, and after the farewell ceremony - without interfering with the personal grief of the fallen soldier's family, but honoring it.
Roman works in the patronage department of the mayor of Lviv. This is his first job after graduating from the Theological Academy. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, he has been involved in the solemn funeral of fallen soldiers and events related to the commemoration. He has organized about 800 funerals of soldiers.
Roman is a bridge between the families of the fallen soldiers and the services involved in the funeral. Each family of a fallen soldier has specific wishes: the flares during the farewell ceremony, singing songs at the coffin, lighting a fire, etc. Through Roman and his team, we learn about the unknown stages of the military funeral rite. Namely, how the families are informed of the death of a soldier, the identification at the mortuary (without focusing on the body and the families), the observance of the military burial protocol, and carry out the rite of the service in a church. The key stage is the burial in the military cemetery – the Field of Mars. Singing in the church choir helps him overcome his reluctance to continue the burial rites of fallen soldiers. Roman decides to be ordained a deacon.
On the field of Mars, there is a sea of flags that sound like birds' wings. All the graves are covered with fresh flowers and candles. Roman from the Field of Mars returns to the council. And everything repeats itself in a circle. He says more and more often that he is tired. He has a dark sense of humor about his work but is always worried, and every loss is felt.
