Draw for Change: We Exist, We Resist

Directing: Mariana Cadenas

Synopsis

Through themes of the body, sexuality and self-acceptance, queer illustrator Maremoto’s world famous paintings deliver a message of contemporary feminism, which in Mexico chiefly reacts to the proliferation of violence against women. Working with the film’s director, Maremoto communicates both the positive and the negative aspects of the female experience. From the artist’s peaceful studio on one level, viewers are then placed in vulnerable situations, where they are empowered to confront potential violence. There’s also an educational dimension to the project, as the artist presents the alarming situation in Mexico and protest marches denouncing gender-based violence.
