A history of the fifty editions of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Although first held in 1946, the twists and turns of the 20th century meant that the festival has only been able to celebrate its fiftieth edition in July 2015. The history of the festival is traced by director Miroslav Janek in cooperation with long-serving artistic consultant Eva Zaoralová, who talks to participants in early editions. Unseen period archives, fascinating facts from the unknown past, interviews about films, guests and what goes on behind the scenes show a different side to the festival at various periods. How did one of today’s major A-list festivals, which for most of its history was at the mercy of political manipulation and hypocritical slogans, develop? The Karlovy Vary festival – as the film fans of today have never seen it before.
