Established in 1993 as a non-profit organization for promoting the development of documentary film, European Documentary Film Symposiums (EDFS) soon started to produce documentaries alongside organizing various educational projects, promotional events and conferences (most prominently – the International Documentary film symposium every other year).
Since 1996 up to now EDFS has produced six successful documentaries in cooperation with well-known Latvian documentary filmmakers.

All of EDFS’ films have been published in VHS or DVD or both formats. The studio also works with national film heritage preservation projects and thus far has restored and published a compilation DVD of the early films of Riga School of Poetic Documentary master Uldis Brauns (incl. White Bells, 1961) supplemented with a documentary Comeback made especially for the DVD.
