Background Films

Prague-based Background Films produces European arthouse cinema. Klára Žaloudková and Mikuláš Novotný established the company to inspire, entertain and move audiences. Its productions include the six-hour film essay COMMUNISM AND THE NET OR THE END OF REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY by Czech New Wave legend Karel Vachek (Rotterdam 2020), Poland’s 2022 Oscar submission LEAVE NO TRACES by Jan P. Matuszyński (Venice Main Competition 2021), Mihai Mincan’s TO THE NORTH (Venice Orizzonti 2022), and the feature-length documentaries BLIND GULLIVER by Martin Ryšavý and HELENA’S LAW by Petra Nesvačilová (both Ji.hlava 2016), among others.
