Sheffield Fringe is an artist-led film programming initiative exploring the intersection of art & documentary practices, through research, screenings, talks, and exhibition making. As an event, Sheffield Fringe was initiated in 2011 and held annually in Sheffield to coincide with Sheffield Doc/Fest, turning into a biennial event from 2014. The aim of the project has been to provide a space and a context to strengthen artists’ documentary as a specific form of cultural production separate from market pressures. It is otherwise a project with no fixed abode, and past activities have taken place in London, New York, Buenos Aires, Istanbul, Izmir, Utrecht and Kingston, Jamaica on an ad hoc basis.
