ARD, the nationwide first channel on German television, is run by a network of broadcasting corporations. The broadcasters also operate the third channel as a network of nine regional licences. The ARD member in charge of broadcasting in the German Eastern Midlands (Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony) is MDR - Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk. MDR went on the air in 1992, eventually becoming ARD's fifth largest member. MDR has its headquarters in Leipzig and Halle and maintains regional broadcasting houses in the state capitals in its transmission area. As well as regional information and entertainment, MDR broadcasts educational programmes, science and arts progammes (including music), documentaries, feature films, drama series, game and talk shows.
