About the Company

Ruut has produced films and television programmes since 2000. Over the years, a number of feature films, documentaries and many television programmes as well as numerous commercials have been made. Ruut is one of Estonia’s biggest production companies both by the number of films and TV programmes as well as the size of their crew and the company’s turnover.
Ruut’s first feature film Made in Estonia gained the most viewers in 2003 in Estonia, even outperforming The Lord of the Rings. The film has participated at a string of festivals, and was elected one of Europe’s top ten films by Variety in Karlovy Vary. In 2006, Fed up!, co-produced by Estonia and Germany premiered and also received awards at several festivals. Other completed works include the TV-feature The Agony of Hunt, the short film Zen through Garbage, while the TV feature Kinnunen is in post-production and the historical action drama Coffee & Diamonds in production. Ruut’s feature films are produced by Artur Talvik.
The first documentary films by Ruut were made for a series of the Estonian Television called Estonian Stories in 2003. In 2005 and 2006, the first episodes of the documentary series Hot Cold War premiered – Group Haukka and The Blue Hills, which investigate the events of World War II and the Cold War era in Estonia. The latter of the two received the annual prize of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. Among the films which have premiered more recently are Headwind Hall which focuses on the conductor Tõnu Kaljuste and his opera theatre on Naissaar, and Greetings from Soviet Estonia!, about Estonian dissidents. The documentaries Lotman’s World, Baruto, Black-and-White Window and Baltic Buddha are in production. Ruut’s documentaries are produced by Kiur Aarma and Artur Talvik.
