Direzione Generale per il Cinema promotes the development and diffusion of Italian cinema and the national film industry.

In particular:
* intervenes financially to support and promote Italian cinematographic culture
* acts as a financial intermediary with regard to the production and distribution, as well as in for the exhibition sector
* authorises creation of cinemas
* rates films
* intervenes as a share holder in companies operating in the sectore and oversees the Scuola nazionale di cinema
* exercises administrative and financial control and inspection over the bodies for which it is responsibile and which receive subventions from the Ministery of Culture

As part of its competences, the Direzione Generale oversees the allocation of amounts dedicated to cinema of the Fondo Unico dello Spettacolo and manages the work of the related committees.
