Herbert Krill was born and raised in Vienna, Austria. He studied directing and producing at the Vienna Film Academy. In 1975, he went to New York. In the 1980s and 90s, he lived in Los Angeles and reported on Hollywood and Independents in the United States, mostly for the Austrian-German TV program "Apropos Film". Over the years, he interviewed almost 2000 actors, writers, directors, and other film people. He also started to direct his own documentary films, mostly about the world of cinema. During this time, he also wrote for several film magazines and had a regular column in the German media journal "agenda". Since 2001, he has been working almost exclusively as a documentary filmmaker. He now divides his time between the San Francisco Bay Area, Bohemia, and Vienna.
