Graduated from the State Cinematography Institute in Moscow, 1963-1969. Post-graduate studio of Prof. Leonid Kristi: Maris Liepa, 1971 graduation film. From April 1968 - June 1990, worked as a film director Riga Film Studio. Since 1990, contract commissions for various film and video studios. Director and scriptwriter for approx. 50 documentary films and more than a hundred newsreels. Laureate of numerous international film festivals. Selected filmography: Physicians, 1972; Baltic Is Nearby, 1973; Imants Ziedonis, Portray in Cases, 1979 (Lielais Kristaps Award); Ugly Duckling - Child of Man, 1985; Dzemma, 1986 (awarded at DOK Leipzig, Creteil IFF); Categorial Imperative, 1989 (Monte Carlo IFF, San Francisco IFF, Mannheim IFF, Madrid IFF); They Are Also My Sons, 1990 (awarded at Luebeck IFF, Yekaterinburg IFF, Kogoshima IFF, presented in Cannes, Moscow); Century Anniversary (Lielais Kristaps Award), etc. Member of the Board of Latvian Filmmakers Union. President of the Film Directors Guild. Vice-president of the Latvian Department of Dante Alighieri Society in Italy.
