Matěj studied at New Zealand Film Academy and so far he has been working as a professional photographer. He is also a director and DOP of various advertising spots. His first documentary film was meant to be the one he started to shoot with his best friend Matus Jankovic in Congo, but the shooting was ceased by Matus' tragic death. Matěj wanted to finish the project so he decided to join forces with Michal Varga. They developed their ideas to the recent shape of documentary feature film The Elephant Wars.
