Matilda Mester is born in Copenhagen, Denmark, where she started working as a cinematographer for short films. Her first documentary short film (Christopher Wants To Fly", director: Maria Bäck) was shown at the International Documentary Filmfestival in Amsterdam in 2007.
In 2008 she moved to Berlin to start her studies in cinematography at the DFFB. Here she made her first feature film "Limbo" (director: Anna Sofie Hartmann) that premiered at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, was nominated for the Discovery Award at the European Film Awards and premiered in German cinemas. An important partnership during her studies was also with Jan Bachmann, whose short film "Man müsste Räuber sein oder zumindest Sprengmeister" was nominated for Best Experimental Film by the German Critics
