Lawrence Loewinger is a producer/director, sound mixer, teacher and film journalist. His documentary film, “Kids Are People,” produced in 1972, had an active festival life, won several awards upon release, was broadcast on regional public television and went into distribution. For further information on KIDS please see the “Previous Film Sample.” Soon after KIDS, he took a hiatus as a filmmaker and embarked on long and distinguished career as a location sound mixer for documentaries, features and episodic television. Early in his career he recorded sound for the Academy Award winning documentary, FROM MAO TO MOZART. In the 80s he worked on several of Jim Brown’s music documentaries, starting with WASN’T THAT A TIME, and including, A VISION SHARED, the songs of Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie. He was the sound mixer and supervising engineer on VLADIMIR HOROWITZ: THE LAST ROMANTIC, directed by Albert and David Maysles. A CD was also produced from THE LAST ROMANTIC. For his work he received an Emmy nomination. In the 90s he worked with the creators of the musical, STOMP, on their award winning HBO special, STOMP OUT LOUD, and one of their Imax films, PULSE. Lately he has mixed features and television shows. Recent credits include many days recording sound on Tina Fey’s award winning NBC show, 30 ROCK, for which he received an Emmy. He was one of the mixers on the recently released, PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL “PUSH” BY SAPPHIRE. He has taught film making at Wesleyan University & sound recording at New York University, the School of Visual Arts/NY and at other institutions. NOT FOR THE DEAD marks his return to filmmaking.
